From Israel to Plovdiv – the journey of world-leading cryptomedia

Founded in 2016, the platform is now read by nearly three million people worldwide and plans to expand its team

The history of CryptoPotato media dates back to the time when a Bitcoin cost $ 700. Now, when it often exceeds $ 40,000, the multilingual platform is already one of the most popular sources of information in the field and is read by nearly three million people. The main “asset” of CryptoPotato is the small editorial team based in Plovdiv. With the increasing interest and investments in cryptocurrencies, the company plans to expand its team in order to develop a Bulgarian section and create more video content.

To Plovdiv
Israeli enthusiasts Yuval Govezensky, Jonathan Berger and Saar Katoa created CryptoPotato in 2016, when interest in cryptocurrencies was growing, but the information was still scarce. The platform was then an information blog in English with educational texts on the various alternative currencies and rules on how to invest and trade with them. In 2017, when the price of Bitcoin jumped to $ 20,000 and cryptocurrencies gained popularity, the founders decided to turn their amateur blog into a specialized medium, and a year later the  decided to move it to Plovdiv.

The CryptoPotato team consists of a total of 16 people, mostly freelancers, in different parts of the world – Canada, Great Britain, Nigeria and Australia. The headquarters is in Plovdiv, where the chief editor Georgi Georgiev and the reporters Dimitar Djondjorov and Yordan Lyanchev, who is also deputy editor-in-chief of the media work. The Bulgarian team is complemented by Viktor Nikolov, who sells advertising content on the site, and an external marketing specialist manages and develops CryptoPotato profiles on social networks.

Over the years, the platform has become one of the most popular foreign language sources of information about the crypto world. The texts cover topics for new currencies, analyzes of their prices and market movements, and even funny posts from Twitter. The team aims to give depth to the lyrics, so that even commenting on an up-to-date tweet by Elon Musk, to explain what this will lead to. Currently, the content on the platform is available in six languages, including Spanish, Turkish, German and Hindi.

The team has been developing a YouTube channel where they publish episodes from their own podcast, short informative videos with the latest krypton news and interesting facts about them.

According to the chief editor of CryptoPotato Georgi Georgiev, the site is among the top 10 most popular sources of information in the world on the subject of cryptocurrency and has between two and three million readers. While nearly 30% of users are from the United States, the platform is also popular in Western Europe, India and the United Arab Emirates.

The main source of revenue for CryptoPotato is the sale of advertisements, sponsored videos and texts in which they present companies in the sector or review their products. “Any content that is paid for and published on the CryptoPotato website is marked as such,” Georgiev told Capital, adding that they want to be honest with their readers. Although it is an advertisement, Georgiev points out that before writing about each new product, they do their own research on whether the company is legitimate and whether its product is not a scam. “This is necessary because our sphere still resembles the Wild West and there are a lot of scams.” Georgiev commented that they have an idea to organize a cryptocurrency event in Bulgaria.

According to Georgiev, the prices of cryptocurrencies are rising and this leads to interest and thirst for information from readers, and if there is an audience that is interested in crypto, the creators of such currencies are interested in advertising on sites like CryptoPotato. “If you own an agricultural pharmacy, you will advertise on sites that write about agriculture, and if you own a crypto business, you will advertise with us,” says the editor-in-chief.

Worldwide and local

The intentions of Georgi Georgiev and the partners in the company are to increase the team in Bulgaria, with Plovdiv as a priority. The goal is to hire contract employees to replace the existing freelancers. In addition to journalists, they aim to form a small team of two people to work on a video production for their YouTube channel. The team is also looking for three people in the US or Canada to create content for the US market, which is currently coordinated by the Bulgarian team.

The company plans in the near future to establish a Bulgarian section of the media and a small editorial team  for copywriting. Translations of educational content on the basics of crypto markets in Bulgarian are already being prepared, which will be followed by articles aimed at Bulgarian consumers. “We have the infrastructure and we want to focus on the Bulgarian market, as there is certainly interest,” the chief editor said.
